Access Statement

Introduction

Here at The Blue Palms we aim to offer a personal service tailored to the needs of the customer. Blue Palms is a large house built c. 1870, which was extended and converted into a hotel about 50 years ago and offers quality accommodation in the centre of Bournemouth.

There are 7 en suite rooms situated on the first floor, reached only by flights of stairs. There are two small bedrooms (one single and one single studio) on the ground floor. We are licensed to serve alcoholic drinks. We are situated in the West Cliff area of Bournemouth which is very close to the town centre but uphill from the main shops and beaches.

The Blue Palms cannot be accessed on foot without walking up one of several fairly steep hills. There are a 7 steps (15 cm high) up to the entrance which is built above ground level then 2 further steps (14 cm high) into the house itself. With many doors being fairly narrow  by modern standards, the house is not suitable for wheelchair users.

The Blue Palms is at the top of a hill at the junction of 3 roads, all of which are fairly steep and with pavements that may have defects, such as cracked and misaligned stones.
The main travel interchange is about 8-10 minutes away by taxi
The nearest bus stop is about 5 minutes walk but hills cannot be avoided
The airport is about 4.5 miles away. There is an hourly airport bus which drops off at the bus stop 5 minutes walk away
We can book taxis including accessible ones
We can also assist in arranging wheelchair hire

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

There is parking at the rear and side of the property. There is sufficient parking but guests may have to leave car keys to ensure no one is blocked
We are happy to park cars if assistance needed
Naturally we will assist guests with luggage
The surface is flat and concrete/tarmac up to the entrance steps
The minimum number of steps to get to the patio which leads to the entrance is 7 (each about 15cm high)
There is a doorbell at waist height but it is currently disconnected owing to re-purposing of some rooms.

Main Entrance

The minimum number of steps to get to the entrance is 7 with each step 15 cm.
There is a step (13cm) into the small entrance lobby then another step up (14cm) then a step down again into the Reception area, owing to the weatherproofing of the front door.
The Front Door is kept locked but the bell is at waist height
There is no seating in the hallway but a chair will be provided if needed.
The hall is fully carpeted

Public Areas - Hall, Stairs, Landing, Corridors etc

The Public areas (Dining Room and Entrance Hall) are all situated on the ground floor with level access
Furniture can be moved as needed
Dining Room chairs do not have arms

Public Areas

Breakfast is served in the Dining Room which is on the ground floor with no steps for access. 
We can provide menus in large print by prior arrangement. Unfortunately we do not have the facilities to provide them in braille

Public WCs

Not available. All rooms are en suite

Dining Room

Drinks are served in rooms or outside on the patio.
Flat access to the tables on the patio once outside but access to the garden involves a slightly uneven approach and a step down onto the lawn which is on a slight slope.  Depending on the season and weather, the grass may not be trimmed short.
Breakfast is served in the Dining Room on the ground floor
Menus can be provided in large print by prior arrangement or we can read them for you.

Bedrooms

There are two small ground floor bedrooms (one single bedroom and one single mini-studio). All bedrooms are on the first floor. There is a handrail on the stairs which are fully carpeted. Beds are divans of standard height (approximately 65cms)
All rooms are carpeted, except for designated 'mini-kitchen' areas, which have plastic vinyl or laminate floors. En suites shower-rooms have vinyl floors.
TVs have remote controls
The fire alarm is a loud continuous bell. Please let us know on arrival if you may need help in the event of an evacuation or if you think you may not hear the alarm.

Shower-room & WC Ensuite

All rooms have en suites with enclosed showers raised about 28cm above the floor and standard height WC and pedestal basins.
No rooms have baths
All en suites have vinyl floors.

Additional Information

Blue Palms is strictly non-smoking. 
Mobile network coverage is generally good although, owing to the substantial external walls and reduced ranges of the latest generations of network, there may be some areas in some rooms where signal strengths are weak (depending on your network).
Free WiFi is available in all rooms and public areas
There is a Loud fire alarm. The Duty Manager will personally advise of any emergency evacuation where needed
We will arrange appointments with a local Doctor if required
